The galleys for Burning Sky have been turned in (a day early!). Thanks to everyone who wished me well and prayed me through.
I finished them up before lunch, and so I decided to take a quick trip to the grocery store for supplies, then take the rest of the afternoon off and spend it in the kitchen, puttering around and listening to the current audio book, The Language of Flowers, by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.
As my writing work load has increased over the past year, it’s been rarer that I’ve been able indulge my creativity with food preparation in the middle of the week. Usually dinner is whatever I can throw together quickly, and still be nutritious. But that isn’t very satisfying to my inner chef.
Do you enjoy cooking? Baking? Is it an artistic outlet for you too?
Today I made lasagna, using gluten free noodles for the first time. I’ve recently gone mostly GF. I can get away with eating a little bit of gluten, once or twice a week, but the days of being able to enjoy yummy breads, cake, brownies, etc are over for me.
Good thing there are so many GF alternatives out there now. Like rice pasta. It’s actually pretty good. I’m looking forward to lasagna for dinner. I like to add some ground hamburger (spiced) and black olives to the ricotta/mozarella/parmesan cheese mixture. Sometimes spinach too, but I didn’t have that on hand today.
Do you have a favorite lasagna recipe, or ingredient?
I also made a small batch of Rice Krispy Marshmallow squares. Love, love, love those, and they are pretty much gluten free. At least there’s no wheat in the ingredients listed and that’s what I have to watch out for.
I’ll be stopping in at a favorite bakery later this month. A place tucked away in the Oregon mountains called Heaven On Earth, to visit with some writer friends. Think I’ll be saving my weekly (monthly?) gluten allowance for then!
Oooh! The Language of Flowers is wonderful, Lori! It's a about a topic that is dear to my heart–abused foster children.
And happy Galley Free Day!!!!
I'm really enjoying it. I always love finding a new to me author, a fresh voice. I don't read a lot of books with a contemporary setting, and fewer still do I finish. But this one has really drawn me in. Victoria is such a unique character. There are times I don't like her at all, but I totally understand why she is how she is, and why she's making the choices she's making, but I hope for better for her! I'm about halfway through.
Congrats on getting your galleys done!
What time is dinner? [g]
Dinner is… now!
Yummy. Recently I made Jamie Oliver's lasagne from his Food Revolution cook book. It was very very good and different from my usual recipe. I used regular noodles but I'm sure it would be good with rice noodles too. I can't wait to pick up your book Lori. Enjoy your supper!
Those rice noodles are almost indistinguishable from regular pasta, as far as I'm concerned. But I'm not that picky an eater.
Thanks for wanting to read Burning Sky! It seems an age away, August, but I know the months will fly by, with another book to edit, and two to polish and their sequels to plot and research, and articles and devotionals and Q&As for Burning Sky to write and….
I may not get another afternoon in the kitchen for a while!
